Designing the Desk's Data Engine: Why the Real Answer Lies Below the Cloud

TradeTech's panel session, "Designing the Desk's Data Engine," put the industry's shared challenge into sharp focus: how can a robust data strategy and cloud adoption genuinely future-proof trading infrastructure for scale and resilience? The speaker line-up — spanning LSEG, EPAM Systems, Amazon Web Services, Graviton Research Capital, and Behavox — signalled just how broadly this question resonates across the front-office ecosystem. 

But there is a dimension the conversation rarely reaches. Firms can adopt the cloud, articulate a data strategy, and build a governance framework — and still find that data moves inconsistently across their own systems. The question is not only whether you have a data engine. It's whether every system in your stack can actually read from it. 

Cloud Is Half the Answer 

The instinct to treat cloud migration as the primary solution to data problems is understandable. Scalability, resilience, elastic compute — these are real gains. But the structural reality of front-office technology tells a different story. FIS Front Arena, SimCorp ONE, ION Aphelion, BlackRock Aladdin — each operates on its own data model, its own API logic, its own vocabulary for describing positions, risk, and orders. Migrating these to the cloud doesn't resolve the underlying fragmentation. It relocates it. 

The data engine metaphor is instructive precisely because engines require connected parts. A cloud-hosted silo is still a silo. 

In the AI Era, the Bottleneck Is Not the Model 

Generative AI and machine learning tools are moving rapidly into front-office workflows — trade surveillance, portfolio analytics, pre-trade risk, client reporting. But across institutions, the consistent limiting factor is not model quality. It is data accessibility. 

For AI to reason effectively, data must be normalised, context-preserved, and delivered in near real-time. It must carry lineage — the ability to trace where a number came from, through which system, under which governance rule. Most current architectures do not meet these conditions. Vendor platforms impose their own schemas. Integration remains custom, costly, and brittle. The result: AI pilots succeed in controlled environments and stall at the threshold of production.

Cloud is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one. Data strategy must be designed in concert with integration architecture. And AI readiness begins not with model selection, but with the layer that determines whether your data is coherent enough for any model to use.
